F IGURE 11.16 Sample indicator illustrating wrench time performance.

One limitation of wrench time analysis is that it makes no presumption of how productive a technician is while on the job . On the other hand, one would presume that the on job productivity should stay the same so increasing the amount of time on the job should increase the overall amount of work produced . Planning Principle 6 in Chap. 2 explains that increasing the amount of time technicians are on the job is the purpose of planning. The measure of wrench time indicates the effectiveness of the planning and scheduling process rather than the efforts of the technicians themselves . Nevertheless, simply measuring wrench time takes time and effort and also has the potential to make a workforce nervous. The appendices address how to manage this time and psychology, but simply measuring work order completion with an eye on the backlog might be adequate instead of doing any wrench time studies to see if scheduling is “working.”
